Anyways, have I mentioned Chris and I are super cheap? Well we are...we moved into our home a year ago...yesterday! And we have put off doing our bedroom the entire time, just because we haven't wanted to spend the money. But finally the depressing ugliness got to me, and we have started getting everything started. Step one was getting matching nightstands...but we decided spending $40 or more on each nightstand was ridiculous...so I decided to make them myself. The total cost for both was about $20...they aren't the prettiest nightstands I've seen, but they do their job.
-Four 12" shelf brackets...I didn't care about the color, so we just used white, but you can use whatever.
-Two pieces of wood 12"x24"...we use 1" thick oak, again use whatever works for you, you can even cheat and buy something like this.
-Spray paint, in your choice of color.
-Sand paper
-Anchors, and screws...I used 3/4" screws to attach the bracket to the shelves, and I used anchors, with 1" screws to attach the shelves to the walls.
First sand your wood a little, and set up a spray paint station like so.
Spray the bottom and sides, and let dry. Flip and spray the top.
Let dry completely (about 10 minutes).
I highly recommend you invest in some gloves like this...this was only after the first coat.
I also recommend you wear shoes...
[Sorry my feet aren't perfectly pedicured...as a new Mommy, you just let go of things]
Okay, so your paint is dry!
Now take your wood, and sand it. You are going for a really smooth finish, so keep going until you are happy with it...I did this part inside, because James was taking a nap, and it was just easier for me, but it was messy, so try to do this outside.
Once you are done sanding...repeat.
Paint, dry, sand.
[I wanted more or a "distressed" look, so I sanded the edges, and random spots more.]
I attached my brackets 2" from each end of the shelf.
Then I attached them 2' up from my baseboards.
And there we go.
We are really happy with them, they are simple and functional...and they saved us a ton of money, so it makes them even better!
[Sorry for the crappy picture...its from my phone]

Adorable!
